Dusts

Dessicants: The most commonly known and used desiccant is silica gel which is a form of silica dioxide (SiO2), a naturally occurring mineral. It has several uses, commonly to absorb moisture silica gel will still absorb up to 40% of its weight in water vapor.

It is also an insecticide, with no active ingredients that kill pests (insects) by damaging their cuticle thus causing them to dehydrate. Used in instances of insect insecticide resistancy and / or in combination with insecticide dusts, most commonly in cavities and difficult to reach areas.

Residual dust: Insecticidal dusts are widely used for difficult to reach areas and gives long-term levels of residual effect, depending on conditions e.g. humidity, exposure to elements and can remain effective for anything between 3 to 6 months. However due to the application method, dusting in human occupied areas is generally not practiced.

Insecticidal dusts can contain active ingredients such as permethrin or bicarbomate in low levels, although highly potent to insects.

Boric acid is a colourless, odourless, white powder that is slightly soluble in water. It acts as a stomach poison to cockroaches when ingested. Borate products have low toxicity to humans and other mammals. When ingested in high doses, however, boric acid can be harmful.
